Abstract

The tundish is a connecting link between the ladle and the mold which ensures a steady supply of steel continuously to produce slabs or billets. Now there are chances of steel contamination and inclusion formation in the tundish, and failure to understand the thermodynamic and associated hydrodynamic phenomena in the tundish can lead to catastrophic results. Most importantly slab quality, and coil quality can be correlated to events occurring at the tundish, and transport phenomena, and thermodynamics can explain the cause and effects. In the present study, a billet caster and a slab caster are considered. Specific cases on how billet and slab quality correlate back to tundish operational practices are depicted. Some of these examples include a) Why a particular strand has more customer complaints b) Why certain heats have a burst of inclusions in the billets c) Why inclusion count and area fraction increases in the slabs for IF steels d) Why certain heats are clogged and certain heats not clogged. All these examples employed physical modelling, mathematical modelling and plant trials as troubleshooting techniques.
